Schools and Groups

Throughout the spring, summer and autumn months I have worked with several school projects which promote angling. The aim of the projects is to offer different and diverse sporting options to school children who previously may have not had the chance to go fishing. The projects can be used in a sporting context and in an educational one. I have found that school children respond to the sessions and grow in both their knowledge of the environment and in confidence as a result of the weekly sessions.

Weekday fishing sessions within school hours

We can offer weekday fishing sessions within school hours at local fisheries close to school where all tackle, bait and coaching is provided. As previously mentioned I am CRB checked and certified in First Aid and Child Protection and as a result we offer a non-judgemental approach which helps with the students’ confidence and self-esteem.

A typical ten week course will run once a week from approximately 1pm until 3pm on the chosen day; however timings can be arranged to suit. The number of students is best to be kept from around three to ten so that each one has a good opportunity to receive the best from the course. The courses can start with the option to do up to three, hour long classroom sessions which would cover fish identification, knowledge of the tackle and how to use it correctly, health and safety and codes of conduct and basic rig making.

The course can then offer a session of pond dipping at a local fishery with nets, which gives the students the chance to learn about how plants and animals live in the water. The course would then include angling and the students would learn about the basic angling skills over a few sessions. At the end of the ten week course each student will be awarded with a certificate of achievement from Improve Your Fishing and small prizes can be awarded at the schools discretion.

I firmly believe that these courses can lead on to bigger things with the option to help the school set up an angling club and possibly compete against other schools in the area.
